Covering the World from Yachats.

Walking back from the Post Office up the hill towards my house in Yachats I saw a mother deer and her two fawns eating what was left of my roses. I stayed quiet and got within a few feet before they noticed me and sprinted through my back yard and down the hill. I suppose I should have been mad at their eating my roses but I imagine that to a deer a rose is quite a treat.

So I continued on and looked down on Highway 101 where there was very little traffic. Quite a contrast from a few weeks ago when it was so busy it was hard to cross because of the cars, trucks, and motor homes rolling through town. It was beginning to get cloudy and I could see a rain storm developing on the horizon. To say the village was quiet is an understatement; it was as lively as a library reading room!

However, in addition to being a newspaper columnist I’m also an author and have just released a book “When Movie Was A Band” and what makes this interesting is that all of the work done on the book was done in little Yachats and Newport. The mechanical work; the printing, the formatting for an E book, the cover design, and placing of the ISBN and Library Of Congress numbers on it were done in Newport while all the writing was done in my office in Yachats. Now the next part of the process will also be done in Yachats. The placement of the book on Amazon.com and their new video converter Kindle, will be completed via email from my office. Instantly it will available all over the world. The need to be in New York or Los Angeles to publish is no longer necessary. Thanks to the electronic world one can even publish on demand which simply requires an electronically formatted book to be placed with a company and printed only when it’s sold. It eliminates the need for warehousing unsold books and fees up the writer to operate from anywhere.

Yachats, Waldport and Seal Rock are homes to many folks who work in the cyber world. They’ve chosen to live in these great costal areas while working to make a living. In fact several years ago both Yachats and Waldport were actively promoting their livability to folks who were dealing with electronic work. It’s a great situation if it fits what one does for a living and there are quite a few here that do that. In addition to the writers there are the web designers, the publishers, the public relation people and others that strictly operate on the internet. As we progress into this century the electronic market is expanding even to the level where you can hire a personal assistant in India by the hour to do your scheduling work if you need it. But I’m simple so I do all my own scheduling while enjoying watching the deer and the ocean while I work on covering the world from little Yachats!
